The headlines for major dallies in Nigeria
today, June 3, have their focus on the
developments within the now restive
Niger Delta region.
Naij.com recalls that in recent times,
violence has returned to the region, with the
Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) spearheading
some of the major attacks mostly carried out
on oil facilities.
We begin with reports according to The
Nation. On the front page sits the title,
“Militants kill two soldiers, 5 others in boat
house attack”.
Militants attacked a military house boat at
Ejere Junction, a creek in Warri South council
area of Delta state, killing seven people,
including two soldiers.
The killings have heightened the tension in
the oil-rich Niger Delta where oil facilities
have been attacked. Nigeria’s output has
been badly affected.
The Nation gathered that five boats, loaded
with heavily armed insurgents, stormed an
isolated boat house, located inside the creek
around Omadino, an Itsekiri community, at
about 8:00pm and opened fire on the
occupants, killing all those onboard, except a
civilian, who reportedly died on the way to
the hospital.
There was no claim of responsibility for the
Wednesday attack.
A community source said the attack
happened at about 8:00pm. He said all
occupants of the boat, whom he thought to
be soldiers, were killed.
Vanguard also has about the same story as
its headline, with a little change in the figures
of casualties recorded. According to their
version of the report, 6 civilians lost their
lives in the attack.
Vanguard further reveals that in an
electronic mail sent at 9.47 pm, the group
said: “The Niger Delta Avengers are not
involved in the attack of the military
houseboat around Warri, Delta state. Killing
of sleeping soldiers is not our style. We
promise the world that in this process of
liberating our people, not a single blood of
Nigeria soldiers will be wasted despite the
provocation.
“Even the inhumane Nigeria soldiers are
exempted, our war is on oil installations not
to take innocent lives. For the fact we can’t
give life, we also don’t have the power to
take any life. But we (Avengers) are assuring
the families of the affected soldiers that we
will bring the culprits to book.
“When it is time to face the military in
combat, let the whole world know that we
won’t be the ones to throw the first punch.
“This message is going to all groups parading
themselves as freedom fighters. You can
fight for your people without killing innocent
souls. NDA has proved, we were able to drop
Nigeria oil production from two million
barrels to just 800,000 barrels without killing
a soul.
“We are warning every group to follow our
footsteps. The days of killing and kidnapping
are over.” It also tweeted: “At about 2:00am
today (yesterday) @NDAvengers blew up
the Ogboinbiri to Tebidaba and Clough Creek
to Tebidaba Crude Oil pipelines in Bayelsa
state.
“This is in line with our promise to all
international oil companies and Indigenous
Oil Companies that Nigeria oil production
will be zero.”
The Guardian turns its focus on the visit of
the Nigerian president to Ogoniland, for the
launch of the clean-up exercise of the
polluted land.
